A handsome copy of this important landmark title in superb condition.

Perfect for a Verne collector, presenting well on the shelf with a nice crisp readable binding, and without the excessive wear, and/or broken bindings as is typically found with Verne books. A superb copy of this important Verne title in rare highly collectible condition with the scarce original end papers. All pages are present and are unusually clean especially for a Verne book with but a few highly scant handling marks. Unlike most copies of this title which have poor/cracked bindings and loose pages, this book is tightly bound and is quite readable and not fragile. The boards have no edgewear, and the binding is very tight and square. The book has had some slight restoration with the spine rebacked, and presents extremely well. The original brown coated end papers are still present with a hard to see dark colored owner name across the end papers (see images). The book is in great condition with vibrant emerald green boards with a bright gilt scenes and titles to the front and spine. Fully illustrated with 110 illustrations, 303 pages. However the Boston fire destroyed all but an estimated 50 copies of this printing so the 1873 Geo Smith printing is considered the next true first edition, with the 1874 printing to be the second printing, this copy is printed by Geo. The true first printing of this book was printed by Osgood in 1873. Beautiful clean book with the original end papers and a crisp binding.

The description of Nemo's ship the Nautilus was considered ahead of its time, as it accurately describes features on submarines, which at the time were very primitive vessels. Originally written in 1870 by the French author Jules Verne, it was highly acclaimed when released and still remains one of the classic science fiction adventure novels to this day. Our copy appears to equate to Number 6 in the celestial spine series produced by this publisher in the early 20th century. Overall a 'Good+' copy of a rare and attractive edition. Foxing to text-block and marginal foxing throughout. The front free end paper has been removed so the book opens on to the half-title. Original blue cloth, gilt title to spine with accompanying fish design, printed title to upper cover with colour plate decoration featuring a giant squid. With colour frontispiece, 3 other colour plates and 12 black & white plates.
